With everyone tightening their purse strings in this economic downturn, a gym membership can be a luxury item which you can do without. However, there are simple ways to increase the amount of exercise you get in your day to day life without having to go to a gym.
It may sound simple, but try walking up the stairs at work or elsewhere instead of taking the lift, or get off the bus or metro station 1 or 2 stops before your home or work, and walk the remainder of the way. Try carrying your groceries home with you instead of using the car. In fact, how about try walking everywhere – you will soon feel the benefits, and it will have cost you nothing.
Another thing you might want to do is to cut out public transport altogether, and try cycling to work. Cycling also means an end to the misery of commuting, or the slow rush hour traffic. Also, if you do want to go to a gym, try going to a local authority run gym – these are much cheaper than private gyms, and the same goes for swimming pools.
